Description
The Church of St John, an Anglican church built in 1828 for the Peel parish, is located on Lemon Street in Truro. Designed by Philip Sambell, the church underwent alterations between 1893 and 1900. The west street elevation features granite ashlar, while the rest of the structure is made from local stone rubble with freestone, granite, and brick dressings. It has a dry Delabole slate roof that is hipped at the west end and cast-iron ogee gutters.
The church has a rectangular aisleless plan with an apsidal chancel. Its symmetrical three-bay west front includes corner pilasters and a parapet, with a projecting central bay topped by a cupola supported by six slender wooden Tuscan columns. Above the bowed porch projection is a central rose window, flanked by a blind arcade of five round arches and a moulded parapet, with the flanking bays also being blind. Each return of the central bay features a round-arched doorway, with a truncated rose window above. To the left, there is a 15th or 16th-century four-centred-arched doorway with a square hoodmould.
Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted to have a gallery on painted columns. The original iron railings surrounding the forecourt have spear-headed shafts and turned stanchions.
