Description
Walsingham Place features a planned street of two terraces of small town houses, built in the early 19th century, possibly by Philip Sambell. Many of these houses are now used as offices. The houses at Nos 2-6 retain their original stucco, while Nos 8-16 have had their surfaces stripped to reveal rubble walls with brick dressings. The roofs of Nos 2-16 are covered with dry Delabole slate, except for those with asbestos slate roofs, which have brick end stacks. The houses at Nos 2-6 have projecting eaves supported by wooden brackets.
The two terraces are designed with a shallow depth and built on a curve. Nos 2-6 and 16 each feature two front rooms, a small service room behind one of the front rooms, and a stair hall behind the other. Nos 8-15 consist of four pairs of houses, each with one front room. The buildings are two storeys high, with symmetrical fronts that have a 1:1:1 bay arrangement. Nos 2-6 and each pair of houses have two windows, while No. 16 has three windows. All the houses have original 12-pane hornless sash windows. Pairs of flat pilasters separate the recessed bays, and the doorcases feature lions' heads as corbels supporting flat hoods above panelled doors. Notably, No. 16 has blocked windows on the far right.
The interiors, where inspected, retain much of their original carpentry, joinery, and plasterwork.
