Description
12, 13, and 14 Victoria Square are three townhouses that have been converted into shops. They were built in the early to mid-19th century. The front is finished in stucco, while the upper part above the ground floor on the right-hand return features asbestos slate hanging on studwork over a brick base. The roof is made of grouted scantle slate and has a hipped return on the right side.
The buildings sit on a double-depth corner site and rise three storeys high. The front facing Victoria Square has a four-window range, while the side facing Calenick Street has a two-window range. The main facade on Victoria Square features original 12-pane hornless sash windows, except for the upper sash of the right-hand end window, which is a later replacement. There are two canted bay windows on the first floor, also with original hornless sashes and glazing bars, except for the lower sash on the left. These bay windows are topped with moulded cornices that connect to a moulded string. The upper floors have end pilasters, a middle pilaster on the first floor, and a moulded eaves cornice.
The ground floor has three late 19th-century shop fronts, including a corner shop on the right, which feature pilasters, consoles, and moulded cornices above the fascia, along with 20th-century shop windows. The right-hand return has original 12-pane hornless sashes on the upper floors. The interiors of the shops were altered in the 20th century, and the upper floors have not been inspected.
