Description
4 and 5 River Street is a town house built in the early 19th century. The front is made of stucco on studwork, and the roof is not visible from street level. The building has a deep plan that was altered when it was converted into shops. It stands three storeys high and features a three-window range. Notable architectural details include quoin strips, a mid-floor string with a key-pattern frieze, and a moulded eaves cornice. The original 12-pane hornless sash windows are set within architraves that have scrolled ears, with flat pediments decorated with anthemion on the first floor and plain heads on the second floor, which also has aprons with shell decoration. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front on the left and a late 19th-century shop front on the right, which includes a transom over a pair of doors and two plate-glass windows, with small panes above and end consoles over pilasters, topped with a fascia that has a moulded cornice over dentils. The interior of the shop was altered in the 20th century and was otherwise not inspected.
