Description

Numbers 1-11 and attached railings form a terrace of eleven houses on the west side of Chalcot Square, dating from 1855-60, with Nos 8-11 being built earlier in 1849 and subsequently altered. The houses are constructed of stucco, with rusticated ground floors that are mostly painted. Nos 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 have slate mansard roofs with dormers.

The houses are generally three storeys high and have basements, though Nos 1, 4, 8, and 11 are four storeys high with basements. Most have three windows, though No.1 has a three-window return on its right-hand side, some of the windows being blind. Prostyle, Doric porticoes support stucco balconies that extend across the first-floor windows of Nos 2-6. No.1 has a balustraded balcony. Doorways have cornice heads, fanlights, side lights and panelled doors, some of which are part-glazed; the entrance to No.1 is on its right-hand return. The ground floor windows are tripartite sashes, except at No.1, which has three two-pane sashes. The projecting houses feature panelled pilasters at the angles, rising from the first floor to support the main entablature, which has a modillion cornice below the attic storey (this entablature is missing from No.4). Upper floor sashes are of the lugged architrave type with margin glazing. A continuous cornice connects the first-floor windows, with keystones above them and console brackets in between, with pediments over the central windows of the projecting houses. The second floors also have keystones, with larger projecting keystones in the architraves above the central windows of the projecting houses. The attic storeys have segmental arched, architraved sashes, pilasters at angles, and parapets. Nos 5, 6, and 7 have cornices and a blocking course, whereas the others have cut-back cornices and parapets. The interiors have not been inspected. Attached cast-iron railings are present to the areas.
