Description

This is a mid-18th century town house with a later shop, located in Meneage Street, Helston. The building is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, featuring flat arches, rusticated granite quoins, and a steep asbestos slate roof with a modillion eaves cornice (the roof on the left-hand side is lower pitched). Brick end stacks and a cast-iron ogee gutter are also present. The building’s layout is L-shaped, including a rear wing to the right and a mid-19th century extension to the left. Originally, the right-hand section likely had a symmetrical five-window front. The original five-window range now incorporates a mid-to-late 19th century pilastered central bay with a projecting oriel, horned sashes, a moulded cornice, and a slate roof. The windows are largely mid-to-late 19th century two-pane hornless sashes, though some may be older sashes with glazing bars removed. A nearly full-width shop front was inserted on the ground floor in the late 20th century. The left-hand extension features two mid-19th century hornless sashes with glazing bars to the tops, set within moulded architraves to the rendered studwork of the first floor. Granite ashlar is used on the ground floor, while the window on the left has modern plate glass. The original right-hand section has a 6-panel door. A mid-floor string course is also visible. The interior has not been inspected.
