Description

A town house with later shops, dating from the 17th century and subsequently altered. The front is stuccoed on a timber frame, possibly originally jettied, and has a steep asbestos slate roof with projecting front eaves and brick end stacks. The building has a large U-shaped plan with a wing at the rear, parallel to the rear of numbers 9 and 11. It is three storeys high with a 5-window front. Two original late 17th-century transomed wooden mullioned windows remain, though later casements have been introduced to the second floor. Two further windows on the second floor have 2-light casements, all set within heavy moulded architraves, which may be original. The first floor has three early/mid 19th-century sixteen-pane hornless sash windows within moulded architraves, and an early 20th-century four-light transomed casement on the right. The ground floor has two late 19th-century projecting shop fronts; the one on the left (number 7) has a sloping fascia with a moulded cornice and a canted window with some mullions removed. The shop front at number 5 is double-fronted with an original moulded cornice above a 20th-century fascia. Between the shops, a pair of pilastered doorways has a moulded entablature and panelled overlights. The central doorway contains an early/mid 19th-century four-panel door, while a 20th-century shop door is on its left. The interior shows no visible old or original features. During alterations in the 1980s, a rare four-light ovolo-moulded and glazed mullioned window was revealed and is now exhibited in Helston Museum.
