Description
Two town houses with later shops, dating from the mid-19th century. They are built with stucco over a timber frame, featuring end panelled pilasters, quoin strips, a moulded sill string with brackets, architraves to the right-hand house (number 10) and modillions to the moulded eaves cornice, and an asbestos slate roof. The buildings are deep-plan, with projecting wings flanking a narrow carriageway. Behind number 8 are workshops, and behind number 10 are offices and a warehouse.
The houses are three storeys high, with a four-window range to the second floor and three windows to the first floor. They have mid-19th century hornless sash windows with large panes, set under segmental arches on the second floor. The first floor has a pilastered tripartite window with consoles supporting a triangular pediment that projects forward from the moulded entablature, while flanking canted oriels have pilasters to the angle boxes and a similar entablature.
The ground floor has a panelled end pilaster on the right and a blind basket-arched overlight above an opening, which provides access to a passage, to the right of centre. A full-width sloping fascia covers a mid-20th century shop front to number 8, and a 20th century altered canted shop front with a doorway to its left is present at number 10. The shops’ interiors were altered in the 20th century; the remainder of the interior was not inspected.
