Description

Nos. 12 and 14 and the house at the rear of No. 14 are a pair of town houses with later shops, built in the mid-19th century. The front is rendered, replacing stucco, and features quoin strips, a second-floor sill band, and window architraves around the original openings. The roof is covered with asbestos slate and has projecting front eaves, with a brick stack on the right. The building has a U-shaped plan, with deep wings flanking a narrow carriageway, bridged by a building at the rear. The right-hand wing includes a separate house that is now used as an office.

The structure is three storeys high and has a three-window range. Most of the windows are mid to late 19th-century hornless sashes, except for one horned replacement in the central lights on the second floor and a 20th-century window on the right. The central pair of lights is above a wider pair, flanked by pilastered central oriels with moulded entablatures and bracketed cornices. The ground floor features two altered early 20th-century double shop fronts with a later 20th-century fascia. The rear of the building has four original hornless sashes with glazing bars.

The house at the rear of No. 14 is built of stucco on studwork and is also three storeys high, with a symmetrical three-window front. It features mid to late 19th-century four-pane hornless sashes, and the central pilastered doorway has consoles and a pediment, with a pair of two-panel, top-glazed doors. Inside the house, there is an L-plan open-string staircase with stick balusters and a mahogany handrail that is scrolled over the newel.
