Description

Nos. 18 and 20, including the carriage house to the rear, are two townhouses with later shops, dating from the early to late 19th century. The front is finished in stucco on studwork, featuring a quoin strip on the left, sill brackets, and moulded architraves around the original windows. There are brackets supporting the fascia board, and the roofs are covered with grouted scantle slate. A brick stack is located on the left side. The building has a U-shaped plan with narrow wings at the rear and stands three storeys tall with a four-window range. The original windows are four-pane hornless sashes, except for two late 19th-century oriel windows on the first floor of No. 20, which have pilasters, a moulded entablature, and horned sashes.

On the ground floor, there is a carriage entrance on the left, and a late 19th-century full-width moulded entablature with end consoles frames two late 20th-century altered shop fronts: a larger shop front on the right and a smaller one on the left with a doorway to its left. The rear wing of No. 18 is slate-hung on part of the upper storeys and contains two original 12-pane hornless sashes and two 20-pane fixed lights. The carriage house to the left has weather-boarded upper floors, with two original 10-pane horizontal-sliding sashes on each floor and a former loading doorway on the first floor to the left, which has a 15-pane hornless sash. The ground floor features two wide doorways: a mid-20th-century sliding doorway on the left and three late 19th-century boarded doors on the right. The rear wings and carriage house are well-preserved and are significant elements of this property.
