Description
5 and 7 Coinagehall Street are two town houses that were built in the 18th century and later modified around 1830. The ground floor features granite ashlar, while the upper floors are covered in rendered stucco on studwork, accented by three giant Ionic pilasters. No. 7 has a mid-floor band, and the first floor of No. 5 has carved sill aprons, although much of its original stucco has been replaced with render. The hipped roof is covered with scantle slate on No. 7 and asbestos slate, featuring projecting eaves over a carved frieze. No. 7 retains original guttae on the soffit above a moulded band, and there is a brick stack on the right and over the party wall. The buildings have a double-depth plan with rear service wings at right angles and rise to three storeys, presenting an overall five-window range on the second floor.
No. 5 features three 20th-century 16-pane hornless sash windows within moulded architraves on the second floor, along with two 20th-century pilastered canted bays that have moulded cornices and horned sashes with glazing bars. The ground floor has a late 20th-century shop front. No. 7 includes late 19th-century four-pane horned sashes above a central late 19th-century pilastered canted bay with hornless sashes and a moulded cornice supported by brackets. The ground floor of No. 7 shows remnants of an early 20th-century shop front with end pilasters and a moulded entablature with end consoles, while No. 5 has 20th-century shop windows set between the original ashlar masonry. The classical facade of No. 7 is particularly notable. The interior has not been inspected.
