Description

This is a pair of shops with living accommodation above, built in the mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed with stucco on a timber frame, and feature moulded architraves to the second floor. The roof is covered in grouted scantle slate on the left-hand side (number 24), and dry slate on the right. The buildings form a U-shaped plan, including narrow rear wings. They are three storeys high and appear irregular, with a five-window frontage on the second floor. The windows are late 19th-century horned sashes. Number 24 has two widely-spaced sashes above pilastered canted oriels supported by consoles, and a moulded entablature. A carriageway is located on the left side. The shopfront on the right of number 24 is a 20th-century replica of a 19th-century design, featuring a canted window with two lights plus sidelights, with two panes to each light, a glazed door with overlight, all under a moulded entablature with a fascia and end consoles on pilasters. Number 26 has three close-spaced sashes above a central, first-floor canted bay, similar to those of number 24, but with glazing bars. It also has a late 19th-century shop front with a central mullion and glazing bars that have been removed. The interior of the shop at number 24 has been altered in the 20th century. The other shop retains old boarded panelling to the entrance and a boarded ceiling; the remaining interior was not inspected.
