Description
This listing covers numbers 19, 21, and 21A Gold Street, Tiverton. Dating to the 1840s, the buildings are a pair of adjoining shops with living accommodation above.
The construction is of mass wall construction, with the rear of the building exhibiting local red and purple rubble with brick shafts. The front elevation is faced with line blocked stucco, and the roof is covered in natural slate.
The shops are double-depth, with a single room width and end stacks. A left return provides access to number 21A and a rear staircase leading to the upper accommodation.
The front of the building has a three-storey, two-bay design. Number 21 features a shop front from the 19th century with three panes and a return plate glass shop window, alongside a canted door to the right. The mullions are either cast iron or wooden, supported internally by two substantial cast iron supports. A deep fascia and projecting cornice are also present. A recessed doorway is topped with an overlight and contains a two-panelled door with a glazed top panel. A pilaster separates the two shop fronts at ground level. The first floor windows consist of twelve-pane, hornless sashes, with a blocked window centrally placed. Above this are three similar sashes.
Number 19 has a shop front dating to the late 20th century, but retains its original cornice. A tented porch canopy, supported by curved brackets, provides access to the entrance of number 21A on the left return. The wall construction on this section suggests a possible rear extension or rebuilding at some point.
The interior has not been inspected, but may contain features of interest.
