14 and 16, Bampton Street

14 and 16 Bampton Street is a pair of houses, now functioning as shops with accommodation above, dating from the 1840s. The buildings are constructed with mass wall techniques, featuring stucco and blocked out surfaces, and have slate roofs with gabled ends. They are topped with axial chimney stacks that have brick shafts and old pots.

The plan is double-depth, with the ground floors modified for 20th-century shop use. Access to the first floor is located at the front left.

The exterior consists of three storeys and presents a symmetrical façade with a 2:2 window arrangement. It features deep eaves supported by a moulded eaves band. The shop front has a continuous fascia and cornice, with pilasters adorned with incised Greek key decoration on the left, right, and center. The early 20th-century shop windows are made of plate glass and include moulded mullions. The shop doors, also from the 20th century, have overlights. To the right, there is a recessed 19th-century front door with fielded panels and a deep overlight. All windows are fitted with late 19th to early 20th-century four-pane horned sashes.

The interior has not been inspected but may still have some interesting features. Notably, No. 16 may contain one arcade post from the 1731 market house.
