Description
35A Fore Street is a house, now divided into flats, located in Tiverton. It likely dates from the mid to late 18th century and features solid rendered walls and a slated roof that is hipped at the right-hand end. There are no visible chimneys.
The building has three storeys and an irregular pattern of windows on the front. The ground floor includes a doorway with a projecting wooden porch, which is approximately centered. The porch has tapered, panelled pilasters on either side of the door, supporting an entablature with a triglyphed frieze and a modillioned cornice. The door itself is a four-panelled design with a flush section at the bottom, possibly originally panelled, and the top two panels are now glazed. Above the door is a two-paned fanlight.
To the left of the porch are two windows featuring box-framed, two-paned sashes. On the second storey, there are two additional windows with box-framed sashes; one has two panes per sash above the porch, while the other has eight-paned sashes to its left. The third storey has a two-light casement window with two panes per sash.
On the left return, facing Fore Street, there is one window on both the second and third storeys, both fitted with six-paned sashes. The right return also has one window per storey, all with eight-paned sashes.
The interior has not been inspected, but the entrance lobby features a straight, unbalustraded stair leading up from it, along with two round-arched doorways that have pilasters and keyblocks. This house is significant as one of the few remaining examples in a back-court, a feature that was once typical of Tiverton.
