Description

44 Fore Street is a house with commercial use on the ground floor, formerly a bank. It dates from the early 19th century and has undergone some alterations. The building is constructed with mass wall construction and is smooth-plastered, with a roof concealed behind a parapet and stacks featuring rendered shafts on the left. It is one room wide and two rooms deep, with a 20th-century rear addition. An open passageway to the right leads to the market.

The exterior has three storeys and a three-window front. It features a coped parapet and likely a 20th-century cornice. There are three first-floor and three second-floor windows, all with moulded architraves and glazed with 20th-century horned 12-pane sashes. The ground floor showcases an attractive neo-Georgian shop front from around the 1950s, with composite columns flanking a passageway that includes an overlight with geometric glazing bars. To the left, there is a similar arrangement for a recessed door to an office, featuring a two-leaf external panelled door, creating a symmetrical appearance. The shop window is slightly bowed and has a three-light design with fielded panels below the sill. The window entablature includes a dentil frieze beneath the cornice, with brackets carved with shields and swags.

The interior has not been inspected but may retain features of interest.
