Description
No 17 on Fore Street is a house that also contains a shop and bank on the ground floor. It was built around 1800, with some alterations made in the mid-19th century and later. The front and left side are made of granite ashlar, and it has a hipped slate roof, although the stacks have been removed. The building has a double depth plan with a central entrance, featuring one large room on both the left and right fronts, while the service rooms at the back have been incorporated into the shop and bank on the ground floor. The house steps down to the left, where the ground floor is at a lower level.
The facade is symmetrical but has asymmetrical window arrangements, with five bays on a plinth. The central bay is slightly recessed. The two bays to the right and the central bay are two storeys high, while the two bays to the left are three storeys. On the left side, the ground floor features a 20th-century plate-glass shop window with a recessed half-glazed door to the right, and remnants of the original ground floor sash windows. The first floor has two 12-pane sash windows, and the second floor has two 9-pane sash windows. The central bay contains a six-panelled door with an overlight, set in a recessed bay, with a 12-pane sash window above it. The two bays to the right have two ground floor sashes, which are partly plate-glass and partly six-pane, along with two 12-pane sashes on the first floor. A moulded eaves cornice runs above all the windows. The wall steps back to the right, leading to a lower two-storey block also made of ashlar, which may be from the later 19th century, featuring a sash window on the ground floor and a 9-pane sash on the first floor. The interior has not been inspected.
