Description

15 and 15A Fore Street is a building that was originally a house and is now used as offices for the Bristol and West Building Society, with additional accommodation at the rear. It dates from around 1810, with alterations made in the 1860s. The structure features smooth-plastered mass wall construction and has a roof that is hidden behind a parapet. There are stacks at the left end and rear left corner, with rendered and brick shafts, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The building has a deep, narrow plan that tapers towards the rear. It is one room wide, with the rear left corner chamfered, and the entrance to 15A located on the left return from Phoenix Lane. The third storey, which is only present at the front, may have been added in the 1860s, during which time the front was also enhanced with additional architectural details.

In terms of exterior features, the building has four storeys at the front and three at the rear. The narrow one-bay front faces Fore Street and is flanked by pilasters with sunk panels adorned with roundels. There is a platband at the second-floor level, and a deep projecting cornice above this band indicates that the third floor, which has its own cornice and parapet, is an addition. The front has a late 20th-century commercial shop front.

The first and second-floor windows are fitted with moulded eared shouldered architraves and are glazed with 16-pane hornless sashes, likely from the early 19th century, featuring old glass. The third-floor window is a simple 4 over 8-pane horned sash. The left return of the building is blind at the right-hand end. The door to No. 15A has a 19th-century pilaster doorcase with a cornice and a recessed six-panel door, where the upper panels are fielded and the lower ones are flush; the upper half of the door has been renewed. There are two first-floor segmental-headed 12-pane horned sashes and one similar window on the second floor. The interior has been partially inspected and the ground floor has been replanned.
