Description
The Market House is a former market building that was rebuilt after 1731 and is now used as shops and offices. It features Flemish bond brickwork with blue headers and has timber posts supporting the arcade. The roof is made of natural slate with lead rolls and is hipped at the north end of the front range. The front range is truncated at the south end, and part of the structure may still exist at No. 16.
The building likely had four arcaded ranges surrounding an open court, with the arcade posts for the front (east) range mostly intact, along with some for the west and north ranges. The central court has been covered.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that has seven windows and six surviving arcade bays. The tapering cylindrical timber posts have square section plinths, moulded bases, and capitals. The wall plates are supported by square section timbers with scroll stops above the capitals. The first floor features a plat band at window sill level and deep eaves with a moulded cornice. The first-floor windows have been renewed and consist of two-light iron-framed casements with square leaded panes, likely in their original frames, except for the right-hand window where the sill has been lowered.
A converted bell turret on the building has a deep projecting moulded cornice and a hipped roof topped with a weather vane. The turret also features a clock face dated 1731. Inside, the 20th-century shops incorporate some of the surviving arcade posts.
