Description

Number 29, including the area railings and gates, is a building located on Bampton Street in Tiverton, likely dating from the 1830s. Originally, it may have served as commercial premises with accommodation or offices above, but it is currently used as a newspaper office and living space. The structure is built with mass wall construction, finished in stucco, and features red brick stacks and a slate roof, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The building is paired with Number 31 and both are corner buildings that face a court off Bampton Street. It stands three storeys high, with a basement on the left side. The elevation facing Bampton Street has a two-bay front, a plain platband at the first-floor level, and a moulded eaves cornice. There is a rounded corner recess, with an office entrance featuring a 20th-century shop front and fascia. The ground floor has channelled rustication on the pilasters, and to the right, a door leading to the accommodation above has four fielded panels and an overlight. The elevation has four 12-pane hornless sash windows.

The elevation to Bampton Street has a five-bay front, with a central window at ground-floor level flanked by plain pilasters, suggesting it may have been an entrance in the past. There are five windows on the ground and first floors and four on the second floor, all of which are 12-pane hornless sash windows.

The interior has not been inspected. The basement no longer has access from the exterior but retains square-section cast-iron area railings and three gates topped with tulip and leaf finials.
