Description
27 Bampton Street is a house with a shop that was rebuilt in the early 19th century, although it incorporates elements from an earlier structure. The exterior is rendered over rubble and features a slate roof with a brick stack. The building has three storeys and a two-window front, with mid to late 20th century windows fitted into the original openings. The eaves are bracketed.
A notable feature is the 15th-century doorway, made of local purple stone, which has a round-headed arch with a hoodmoulding and capstone ends. The arch is supported by moulded imposts that have stops and capitals. The door itself, dating from the mid-18th century, consists of two leaves, each with six fielded panels and a glazed pointed arch at the top.
The interior has not been inspected. This building is particularly significant for its medieval doorway, which is said to have been moved from a demolished building in Fore Street.
