Description

31 Bampton Street is a building in Tiverton, likely built in the 1860s as a commercial property with living space above, and is now used as Local Authority offices. It has mass wall construction with a smooth-plastered finish and a hipped, slated M-profile roof that can be seen from the rear. The building features stacks with rendered shafts and horizontal pots.

The structure is a corner building that flanks a court to the east of Bampton Street and is paired with No. 29. There is a door at the rounded corner and a second door opposite the stair on the Bampton Street side.

The exterior consists of three storeys and has a four-window front facing Bampton Street. It has deep eaves that are moulded where they meet the wall. The front right corner is rounded and recessed. The ground floor has bays divided by piers with chanelled rustication, which support a projecting cornice at the first-floor sill level. The left doorway leading to the stair has a recessed two-panel door with a plain, blind overlight and a bootscraper. The corner doorway on the right features a 20th-century two-leaf door with a plain overlight.

The ground-floor window on the right is a tripartite sash with horns, featuring a two-over-one pane in the centre and two panes in the outer lights. The left ground-floor window is a two-over-one pane sash with horns, while the other windows are four-pane horned sashes. The left return of the building is stuccoed and has two round-headed stair windows with margin panes. The right return has three windows and continues in the same style, featuring a central doorway with pilasters and chanelled rustication. The outer ground-floor windows and the first and second-floor windows are two-over-one pane sashes.

The interior has not been inspected but may still have interesting features.
