Description

25A Holloway Road is a late 16th-century outbuilding that has been converted into a house. It features a timber frame with ashlared render and a plain tile gabled roof, while the rear wall is clad in black weatherboarding and includes a tall chimney stack. The building is two storeys high and has a three-window range.

The north-west front showcases a two-storey gabled porch. On the first floor, there are two 12-pane horizontal-sliding casements with moulded surrounds and a 9-pane casement at the porch front. The ground floor has two horizontal-sliding casements similar to those above, along with two 8-pane top-hung windows in moulded surrounds. The porch contains a boarded 20th-century door and plain casements on either side. The south-west flank has a single-light casement above a similar 2-light casement, both from the 20th century. There is an old well with brick curbing immediately behind the south-west flank.

The building is linked on the north-east side to Holloway House, which is not included in this listing, and serves as an extension to it. Inside, the outbuilding retains good quality timber framing and consists of three bays, with rooms located on the ground and first floors at the south-west end. The other two bays form large chambers with an A-frame roof and long strip windows, similar to those found at Rivenshall Farmhouse in Greenstead Green. Notable interior features include jowled posts, curved wall bracing, and a contemporary floor with stop-chamfered spine beams and square joists. The central A-frame has solid knees below a high collar, and another at the north-east end features short arch braces under the collar. This building is remarkably complete and represents an unusual type.
