Description
12 and 14 West Street are a pair of attached houses, now functioning as shops, dating from the 18th century. The buildings are rendered with limestone dressings and feature a hipped roof covered with pantiles. They have a double-depth plan and rise three storeys high, with a two-window range. The front includes two 20th-century shop fronts that are separated by a central doorway, along with a cornice and parapet. There is a shallow oriel window on the right and a 20th-century casement window on the left, while the second-floor windows have cambered heads and five stepped voussoirs, with the right-hand side featuring 8/8-pane sashes and the left-hand side having 20th-century casements. Inside, the central through-passage is flagged, with some panelling to the left of the entrance, opposite a notable two-panel door that is hung upside down. The interior of No. 12 includes a vaulted basement with steps leading up to the front area and a spiral stair from the passage. There is also a narrow, central, open-well winder stair with stick balusters and newels, along with two-panel doors and plastered beams.
