Description
No. 22 West Street is a house with a shop, dating from the 17th century and partly rebuilt around the late 19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble, with the front rendered and featuring decorative applied timber-framing. The roof is made of clay Bridgwater tiles and has gabled ends at both the front and rear. There is a lateral stack on the right side with a 19th-century brick shaft.
The building is two storeys tall with an attic. The ground floor has a late 20th-century shop front. On the first floor, there are two late 19th-century cross-mullion-transom windows. The gabled attic is jettied and also features decorative applied timber-framing, along with a late 19th-century cross-mullion-transom window. The roof has moulded bargeboards, a finial, and a pendant. The stone rear wall has a rebuilt rendered gable.
Inside, the property lacks joinery and most plaster. The ground floor is open from front to back, with two ovolo-with-fillet moulded cross-beams; the front beam is a half-beam with morticed joists, while the back has a chamfered cross-beam with run-out stops and re-set joists. The first floor retains the remains of a partition with studs, creating a front and back room, both featuring chamfered cross-beams. The roof structure was replaced in the late 20th century. At the rear, in a small back yard, there is a roofless stone rubble back-block range.
