Description
No. 8A on West Street in Bristol is a pair of attached houses that have been converted into offices. They date from the early 18th century and were refurbished in 1990. The buildings are constructed of brick with limestone dressings, featuring end stacks and a steep hipped roof. They have a double-depth plan and are designed in an early Georgian style, standing three storeys tall with an attic and a four-window range. The exterior includes rusticated quoins, a cornice that returns one meter from the sides, a first-floor string, and a plain 19th-century parapet. The central entrance has a half-glazed door, flanked by 20th-century shop fronts with inner doorways set back. The windows are framed with timber bolection moulding and contain 6/6-pane sashes, along with two hipped dormers. The rear of the building is roughcast and features a paved yard.
Inside, the property boasts panelled rooms with linked, moulded cornices, beams, and overmantels. There are cupboards with HL hinges beside the fireplaces, and a notable feature is the good central framed open-well staircases that have pyramidal bottoms to the newels.
