Description

A pair of attached houses at 31 and 33 Whiteladies Road, Clifton, Bristol, dating from 1888 and now used as offices. The buildings are constructed of limestone ashlar with lateral stacks and a concrete tile hipped roof. They are designed according to an Italianate style and feature a double-depth plan.

The two-storey houses are arranged over a basement and attic, with a symmetrical three-window front. Wide, shallow three-window bays are punctuated by rusticated quoin strips, a plat band, and bracketed overhanging eaves. The design incorporates a keyed window arcade, with panelled jambs to the semicircular-arched ground-floor and first-floor windows. The first-floor windows have stone-bracketed balconies with pierced balustrades, while the second-floor windows are keyed with segmental arches and panelled aprons. Two-storey porches are located on either side; the right-hand porch has a set-back first floor and a blocked doorway, and the left-hand porch has an urn on a pedestal attached to the outer ground-floor window, mirroring the arched doorways.

The interior features a central dogleg staircase with cast-iron balusters, ornate cornices, and six-panel doors. The buildings are linked to numbers 21 to 33 and function as a single office block.
