Description
Three pairs of linked houses were built in 1852 by Pope, Bindon and Clark. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with party wall stacks, and the roof is not visible. They are arranged with a double-depth plan. The architectural style is Neoclassical.
Each pair is two storeys high with a basement and has a two-window front. The houses feature flanking entrance blocks linked together, creating a recessed balcony above the ground floor. Shallow, pedimented sections project forward over the middle of the balcony, with canted bays. The ground floor is banded to form a frieze, and there is a bracketed cornice and a tall parapet. The doorways have open, Ionic porches with entablatures and balustrades, leading to semicircular-arched entrances fitted with 20th-century glazing and doors. The first-floor windows have three-light bays with balustrades and architraves, eared to the middle with floating cornices. Some windows retain their original 6/6-pane sashes. A single-storey block with a parapet and a 6/6-pane sash is located at the left end.
Inside, the entrance halls contain side dogleg stairs, cornices, shutters and panelled doors. The terrace represents an unusual form of semi-detached arrangement not seen elsewhere in Bristol.
