Description
A pair of attached houses at 16 and 18 Whiteladies Road, Clifton, dating from around 1850. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with lateral and party wall stacks. They have a double-depth plan and are built in a Neoclassical style.
Each house is two storeys high, with an attic and basement, and has a two-window front. The symmetrical front features clasping pilasters extending to a frieze and cornice, an attic storey with its own cornice, and a parapet with balustrades above the windows. The ground floor is rusticated and runs in a band. Steps lead up to the entrances, which have distyle-in-antis Doric columns supporting entablatures with triglyphs, above four-panel doors. Flanking the doors are six-pane windows. Architraves frame the four-pane first-floor sash windows, and the attic windows have two-over-four-pane sashes with horns. Later 19th-century two-storey bays have been added to the middle of No. 16 and a full-height bay to No. 18, both containing tripartite windows with four-over-four-pane sashes.
The side elevations feature projecting centres with a single-window range, topped with balustrades.
Inside, the lobby features a glazed screen and a half-glazed door, leading to a stair hall. This hall contains a dogleg staircase with turned balusters and a curtail. Original cornices and six-panel doors remain.
