Description
Numbers 3 to 9, Southleigh Road, Clifton, is a terrace of four houses built in 1852 by Thomas Pennington. The houses are constructed from limestone ashlar, with party wall stacks and a slate mansard roof. They are designed on a double-depth plan and are in a Late Georgian style incorporating Greek Revival decoration.
Each house has three storeys, a basement, and an attic, with a three-window front. They continue the design of numbers 11 to 39 along Southleigh Road, but with symmetrical three-window facades. The ground floor is banded, and above this are pilasters featuring incised palmette decoration, a cornice, and a parapet. The central recessed doorway has an overlight with margin panes and a six-panel door. The windows are 6/6-pane sashes, larger on the first floor, and the end houses have bracketed slate balconies with cast-iron railings.
The interior includes a lobby with a glazed door and margin panes, a central dogleg staircase with turned balusters, a curtail, and a wreathed handrail, along with cornices and six-panel doors with shutters. Attached to the front of the terrace are spear-headed railings.
