Description
56 and 58 St Edward Street is a pair of houses, likely originally designed to include shops, and still functioning as shops with accommodation above. They date from around 1800 and are constructed of brick with a plain-tiled roof.
The exterior features three storeys and a three-window range. A central entrance leads to one shop, with an identical doorway next to it, both accessed by steps and flanked by cast-iron spearhead railings. The doorways have glazed upper panels and overlights, with their moulded cases forming part of the shop front design, connected by a moulded wood cornice to similar outer pilasters that frame the squared bay windows of the shop front. There is a possible further doorway to the right of the existing paired doors, which is now blocked. The outer windows on the first floor consist of tripartite sashes, with a central 12-pane sash window. There is one tripartite sash window in the attic storey, while the other windows have been inserted. A passage entry is located to the right, and there is a stack on the right-hand gable only. The interior has not been inspected.
