Description

Spout Hall is a house, possibly originally two dwellings, that has been subdivided into flats. It was built in 1873 and is attributed to the architect Richard Norman Shaw. The building features coursed and squared stone on the lower storey, with timber framing above, and has a plain-tiled roof.

The exterior consists of three storeys and an attic, with a four-window range that creates a continuous band of windows on the upper floors. To the left, there is a wide pointed arch supported by corbels, which has a heavy hoodmould and the date inscribed in the stonework above. Internally, this arch is divided, with the left side serving as a rear entry and the right side leading to a doorway that provides access to the upper storeys. The main doorway on the right is a four-centred archway with a mullioned overlight set in a moulded architrave.

The building features three- and four-light wood mullioned and transomed windows with leaded upper lights, some of which contain stained glass, situated between the entries. Above these windows is a moulded bressumer, and the outer bays are strongly jettied, tiering out over the first floor and continuing as gabled dormers. The jetty is coved across the central section of the building, between the projecting gables. The windows are divided into two distinct tiers by a heavy transom, with some leaded glazing surviving in the left-hand window and in narrow side lights of squared oriels. The second-floor windows are of a similar style, though they lack leadwork, while the attic storey windows are simpler three-light casements. A heavy axial stack with star-shaped shafts is also present. The interior has not been inspected.
