Description
No. 3 The Retreat is a house, likely built in the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed of red brick on a stone plinth and has a slate roof. The house is located in a back court off Gold Street, part of a terrace of brick-built houses. It has three storeys and four bays, with end stacks. The building features eight-over-eight timber sash windows and a wooden doorcase that includes reeded pilasters and an entablature with a reeded frieze.
The interior has not been inspected. No. 3 The Retreat is one of the earliest surviving back-court buildings in Tiverton, a style that was once common in the area. Nos. 1 and 2 The Retreat, which are Grade II listed, are located on the opposite side of the court and are of a similar or slightly earlier date. No. 4 The Retreat was also previously listed but was removed from the list after a major fire in 2008.
No. 3 The Retreat is designated at Grade II because it retains its historic character as an early to mid-18th century townhouse, is a rare example of a back-court building from this period in Tiverton, and preserves notable historic features such as the eight-over-eight timber sash windows and the timber door surround.
