Description
The south-east wall of the courtyard to The Retreat is a Grade II listed structure that features fragments from the medieval and Tudor periods. Incorporated into the wall are two heads, likely from fireplaces, and a window or niche, all of which show significant weathering. There is also a four-centred arch with a three-light mullion that was previously part of the rear extension of No 16 and is currently stored in a shed at the back. These elements originate from the 15th-century monastery hostel of the Guild of Our Lady St Mary, which was located on this site. The Retreat Almshouses, numbered 1 to 5 consecutively, along with the south-east wall of the courtyard, form a cohesive group.
