Description

Nos 10 and 12 High Street is a mid-18th century building that was formerly known as the Gate Inn. It was refronted in 1872 and stands three storeys tall, making it taller than the adjacent properties at Nos 2-10. The front is made of red brick and features two windows with elliptical arches on the second floor and round arches on the first floor. The stone keystones on the first floor are inscribed with the year 1872. There are bracketed stone cills on the first and second floors, and the sash windows are square with round glazing in the heads. The building has two shop fronts; No 10A includes two shallow five-light bays with plate glass. The rear of the building is constructed of stone with brick dressings and quoins, featuring three windows with cambered heads on the first floor and a very small old window in the center of the second floor. The roof is covered with high old tiles that have some horizontal banding in red tiles. There are also brick outbuildings with some timbering. Nos 10 and 12 are part of a group that includes the Public Hall and Nos 2 to 24 (even), along with Nos 24a, 26, and 28, while Nos 14, 16, and 20 are noted for their local interest.
