Description
The Retreat Almshouses, located at the rear of 14 and 16 High Street in Stony Stratford, were built in 1892. This single-storey building features three entrances and five windows, with two large gables and one smaller gable. Constructed from stone with brick dressings, it has quoins and a toothed eaves band. The roof is tiled, adorned with a crested ridge and a terracotta flue finial at the center gable. The entrances are round-headed with recessed doors, while the windows have cantered heads and are fitted with casements that include eccentric glazing. The gables also feature paired pointed vents. The Retreat Almshouses, numbered 1 to 5 consecutively, along with the south-east wall of the courtyard, form a cohesive group.
