Description

This is an early house, originally built at an earlier date, which was refaced in the early 18th century. It is two storeys high with a four-window front, spaced in a 1 + 3 arrangement. The front of the building is plastered and the roof is covered with new machine tiles. There are two chimneys. The first-floor windows are glazing bar casement windows set within a plain wooden fillet. Number 26 is slightly set back from the street and has one large, multi-paned window. The front door of number 26 has four incised panels. Number 28 has a shop window on the left, with a throughway, and an entrance on the right. The shared fascia has a hood over the entrance, which is flanked by pilasters. There is a small window above the throughway. The door to number 28 has two raised and fielded panels. Inside, the building retains a good late 16th-century stone fireplace on the first floor, featuring moulded jambs and a four-centred head. Tudor mouldings are visible on the doorway to an adjacent room. Numbers 26 and 28 were formerly the Rose and Crown public house, reputedly the site of Edward V's arrest in 1483.
