Description

No. 40 High Street is an early 19th-century building constructed of painted brick. It features a one-window front facing High Street and three windows on the return to New Street. The building is two storeys tall, with the High Street front showcasing a bay shop front that has a later door. The New Street front is distinguished by three gables. The windows are glazing bar sash types with cambered heads, except for the centre window, which is a two-storey, three-light design. The doorcase is adorned with pilasters leading to an entablature, and it includes a half-glazed door with a thin rectangular fanlight above. No. 40 is part of a group with Nos. 36 to 58 (even) on High Street, with Nos. 54 and 56 noted for local interest.
