Description
The Old George is a low two-storey house, reputedly dating from the mid-16th century, located on the south-west side of High Street in Stony Stratford. The building is set back about 2 feet from the adjoining houses and features an early tiled roof that aligns with that of No 39. It has late brick chimney stacks and a plastered front.
The façade includes two late 18th-century two-storey, four-light rectangular bays, topped by an entablature with a triglyph frieze and a deep mutule cornice. The windows are sash style. A flat-topped porch covers the central doorway, supported by baluster columns and flanked by a high balustrade. Above the door is a moulded panel, and a heavy wooden post projects from the roof to carry a sign.
At the rear, there are fine tiled brick, stone, and timber outbuildings that form a courtyard known as George Yard.
