Description

This is a probable 17th-century house that was refaced with brick in the 18th century. It stands adjacent to the Old George pub. The building has a steep-pitched roof covered with early tiles and brick chimney stacks. A carriageway to the left leads to the Old George Yard, with a jettied first-floor overhang above. A moulded wooden cornice runs along the eaves. There are three sash windows on the first floor; two are positioned south of the centre and have wide wooden frames, while the third is a later addition. A mid-19th-century shop front features a recessed central entrance flanked by fluted pilasters and fascia brackets. Extensive two-storey ranges extend to the rear. Nos. 23 to 49 (odd) on High Street, including No. 25A, form a group, with Nos. 29 to 37 (odd) being of local interest only.
