Description
No. 36 High Street is a small, early 18th-century, two-storey house that was formerly a vicarage. It is constructed of vitrified brick with red surrounds to the windows, which are now painted over. The building has a slight plinth and a three-course band at the first-floor level, which is mostly obscured by a cornice to the fascia. The eaves cornice is made of plaster or wood. The roof is early and tiled, featuring one hipped dormer, a casement window, and a brick chimney stack located at the rear.
On the first floor, there are three windows that are glazing bar sashes set in plain, wide wooden cases, which are near flush framed with square heads. There is a frieze and cornice above a plate glass shop window and a right-hand door, which is flanked by three pilasters with incised panels—two next to the doorway and one to the left of the shop window. The building has an 'L'-shaped plan with a two-storey tiled extension at the rear.
Nos. 36 to 58 (even) High Street form a group, with Nos. 54 and 56 being of local interest.
