Description

This is a mid-19th century shop with accommodation above and a separate house at the rear, fronting Barrington Street. The building is located on Gold Street in Tiverton, and includes the adjacent No. 2 Barrington Street.

The building is constructed of solid, rendered walls; the right side wall of No. 2 Barrington Street is of painted brick. The roofs are tarred slate, with that of No. 40 being hipped towards Barrington Street. There are four red brick chimneys: one on the left end wall of No. 40, another to the right of the ridge and adjoining the hip, both with later brick tops; and two further chimneys, wholly of later brick, at the right-hand end of the Barrington Street front of No. 40 and on the right side wall of No. 2.

No. 40 is three storeys high, with a garret. It has a two-window front to both Gold Street and Barrington Street, with a rounded and recessed corner. A raised band runs between the second and third storeys. The ground storey facing Gold Street features a late 19th-century shop front which extends onto the rounded corner. The recessed glazed shop door is flanked by large display windows, with Gothic shafts at the angles, supporting cusped brackets which rise to narrow ventilator grilles at the tops of the windows. Above the shop front is a tall entablature with a bracketed architrave and dentilled cornice; at either end is a block with a segmental pediment on top and a carved bracket below. The upper storey windows, and a single ground storey window towards Barrington Street, have flat heads and two-paned sashes, each with a single upright glazing bar. Deeply projecting, moulded eaves cornice. A two-light, segmental headed dormer window faces Gold Street, with small-paned sides and two-paned front sashes matching those below. On the return front, above the ground storey, is a shaped cast-iron plaque inscribed "BARRINGTON ST."

No. 2 Barrington Street is two storeys high with a high semi-basement. It has a two-window front, with a doorway occupying the left bay of the ground storey. The doorway and windows are segmental headed. The door has seven panels arranged in four rows, with a single wide panel in the second row from the bottom. The windows have two-paned sashes, like those at No. 40, except for small-paned windows of uncertain date in the semi-basement. There is a projecting, moulded eaves cornice.

The interior has not been inspected.
