Description

This is an early 18th-century house with two shops, located on Gold Street in Tiverton. It is constructed of painted brick with a turnerised slate roof and a brick chimney stack running along the ridge. The main part of the building is single depth, two rooms wide, with a passageway to the left leading to Sharlands Court, a rear courtyard. It is believed to have been the shop of a silversmith, Sharland, who also lived at the adjacent No. 45.

The exterior is asymmetrical with two windows on the front. The low roofline contrasts with other buildings in the street. The ground floor includes a modern plate glass shop window on the right and an older shop front on the left. The left shop front features a canted projecting window with pilasters and a cornice extending over the recessed half-glazed panelled door and its overlight, all contained within a doorcase with sunk panelled reveals. The shop window is divided into three lights by slender wooden columns, likely dating from the early 20th century. A moulded doorway on the left is paired with the doorway to No. 45, giving access to the passageway. The rear elevation has two small-pane sash windows.

Inside, the ground floor features roughly-chamfered crossbeams with slender exposed joists. There’s an exposed timber-framed internal partition with brick infill, and cupboards flanking the chimney pieces. A brick fireplace with a range made by Rundle of Tiverton is present in the ground floor room on the left.
