Description

This is a mid-to-late 18th-century town house with an attached carriage house, located in Coinagehall Street, Helston. The main house is constructed from local Elvan rubble with granite lintels, except for the elliptical arch over the carriageway entrance on the left, which is brick. It has a steep scantle slate roof with projecting eaves and a brick stack on the right. The building has an overall U-shaped plan, including a rear wing set at right angles on the right, and a carriage house that returns parallel at the rear.

The front elevation has two storeys and a three-window range. The original 12-pane hornless sash windows with thick glazing bars remain on the first floor. The windows are spaced closer together on the right side of the building. A doorway, situated right of the middle, features a late 19th-century four-panel door. The left-hand return, within the carriageway, has a boarded-up doorway with an early 19th-century patterned overlight. The elevation of an adjoining wing facing into the courtyard is painted rubble and features two early 19th-century hornless sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor.

The mid-to-late 18th-century carriage house has original first-floor windows with thick glazing bars on the left side and a shuttered window above a wide, elliptically-arched carriage doorway on the right. The carriage doorway retains its original Gothic-style overlight and a pair of planked doors. The interior of the main house has not been inspected, but it is likely to be of interest.
