Description

The Guildhall, built in 1839 by architect William Harris, is a Grade II* listed building located in Market Place, Helston. This Neo-classical structure is constructed from granite ashlar with a rock-faced plinth and features rustication on the ground floor. The front elevation showcases moulded architraves, a mid-floor string course, and a moulded triangular pediment above a low-pitched roof. The building has a rectangular plan and a two-storey pedimented front with three bays. The pediment includes a central clock flanked by carved winged figures, with a Doric frieze featuring triglyphs that return to the sides as part of the parapet entablature. The date of construction is prominently displayed.

On the first floor, there are three twelve-pane hornless sash windows with moulded architraves and hoods, framed by a distyle in antae supported by fluted Doric columns. The ground floor consists of three pilastered doorways topped with solid triangular pediments on consoles, along with original overlights and pairs of panelled doors. The other elevations are well-detailed and complete, with articulated bays and tall sash windows on the side walls. The basement also retains its original sashes.

Inside, the council chamber features columns from a former gallery, although it has been later floored in. The original plaster ceiling remains in the now separate room above. The Guildhall is part of a significant group of buildings, including the market hall, which is now the Museum, all constructed during a prosperous period in Helston's history linked to the tin-mining industry.
