Description
No. 3 Market Place is a large shop built in the late 19th century, which incorporates older buildings at the rear. The shop features a granite ashlar basement and stall risers, with incised stucco above that is likely on studwork, and painted rubble elsewhere. The roof is hipped and covered with asbestos slate, featuring a central hipped slate-hung dormer. The building has a very deep plan and consists of two storeys over a basement. The first floor has a three-bay, three-window range, with original canted pilastered oriels flanking a central bay that contains a four-pane horned sash window, with pilasters dividing the bays. The ground floor showcases a large double transomed shop front with flat-arched lights and incised spandrels at the caps. To the left of the central recessed doorway, there is a pair of doors alongside a single door, complete with overlights and a panelled soffit. The interior is plain but retains some original features. This building is included for its group value.
