Description

Helston Museum, originally a market hall, was built between 1837 and 1838. The datestone notes that it was commenced during the mayoralty of Glynn Grylls and finished during the mayoralty of John Silvester, with W. Harris as the architect from Bristol and W. Penberthy and P. Eva as the builders. The building features a granite ashlar front with a rock-faced plinth, rusticated doorway, and a shaped parapet with a moulded cornice. It has a sloping asbestos slate roof that is hipped at both the front and rear. The structure has a deep rectangular plan built on a slope leading up from the entrance and is a single storey tall.

The front screen wall includes two segmental-arched doorways framed by plain pilasters. The market doorway on the left has a pair of glazed and panelled doors with sidelights and a tall overlight featuring small panels. The doorway on the right leads to an open courtyard. The courtyard elevation consists of 11 bays with segmental-arched window openings, tripartite windows with nine panes per light, a central round-arched doorway with planked doors and a tympanum, a small doorway on the right, and a wide doorway with glazed doors and an overlight at the far right.

Inside, there is an original King-post roof structure. This building is a notable example of architecture from the period, constructed alongside the guildhall during a time of prosperity in Helston due to the tin mining industry.
