Description

No. 14 Church Street is a town house dating from the 17th century, largely rebuilt in the early to mid-18th century. The exterior is constructed of local rubble with granite ashlar lintel courses and flat arches to the ground and first floors, and segmental arches to the basement. The steeply pitched roof is covered in slate and has three hipped dormers with 20th-century two-light casement windows; brick end stacks are also present. The building has an L-shaped plan, including an 18th-century rear wing set at a right angle on the left.

The front of the house has 2 storeys plus an attic over a basement. 20th-century horned sash windows with glazing bars have replaced the original 18th-century sashes, though the original thicker glazing bars were removed from those earlier windows. One original 18th-century 16-pane sash window with thick glazing bars and an arched head remains in the basement towards the right. A carriage opening is situated on the right-hand side. A late 19th-century shop front is located on the left, featuring end pilasters with consoles, slender mullions to basket-arched lights, a 20th-century glazed door and overlight, and a fascia with a moulded cornice that extends over the central pilastered house doorway, which is approached by four granite steps.

The interior retains some 17th-century features, including a chamfered granite lintel to a lateral basement fireplace and roof structure showing lap dovetails to the collars, possibly also dating from the 17th century. Further 18th-century details include a front dog-leg staircase with turned balusters and an 18th-century staircase leading to the rear wing.
