Description
Two shops with living accommodation above, dating to the 1870s and built on an earlier site. The front of the building is stuccoed, with the exception of number 18, which is rendered. The roof is covered in scantle slate and is hipped, with a brick stack on the left side. The building follows a double-depth plan and has three storeys over a basement, with a four-window frontage. The windows are late 19th-century horned sashes, with segmental heads on the second floor. There is a canted oriel window on the first floor to the left and right, supported by pilasters and a moulded entablature with cornice brackets. Number 16 on the left retains original stucco architraves and a moulded sill string to the second floor. The ground floor incorporates two late 19th-century shop fronts with splayed doorways and sidelights. Surviving mullions with arched heads are present, along with a pair of house doorways featuring original four-panel doors, overlights, consoles, and a moulded entablature with bracketed cornices. The rear elevation is notable for retaining many original windows, including round-arched stair windows with coloured margin panes. The interior of the shops was not inspected, but is reported to be plain. The building is included on the list for its contribution to the group value of the surrounding area.
