Description
This is an 18th-century town house with later shops, located in Meneage Street, Helston. The front of the building is faced with stucco and render, built on a studwork frame, topped with a steep roof covered in asbestos slate. There are two 20th-century dormers and one skylight, and brick end stacks. The house originally had a double-depth plan, with later buildings added to a rear courtyard area. It is two storeys high, plus an attic, and was probably originally symmetrical with a five-window front. Number 17 (on the right) has two early to mid-19th century hornless sash windows. Number 19 has three 20th century windows. The ground floor features two late 19th-century shop fronts, flanking a central opening. A full-width entablature with a moulded cornice runs along the front, canted over the shops and interrupted by pilasters at either end, which incorporate tall consoles with arched heads. Number 17’s shop front has slender horizontal glazing bars between slender mullions, while the other shop front is transomed. The interior has not been inspected.
